The chief marketing officer of Infineon, the EU's largest local chip manufacturer, said on Thursday that the EU's ambitions to revitalize chip manufacturing are not based on reality.

According to a Bloomberg report on May 20, Helmut Gassel, Infineon’s chief marketing officer, said in an interview: “In order to meet the needs of the local market, we believe that Europe should focus on introducing modern technologies, but not necessarily the most advanced technologies. "

The European Union recently introduced the "Digital Compass" plan, hoping to double its chip production in the next ten years to at least 20% of global supply, and the plan also seeks to improve the European Union's chip manufacturing process from 20 nanometers to 10 nanometers. Nano advances, the long-term goal is to increase the production process from 5 nanometers to 2 nanometers, the goal is to compete with TSMC and Samsung.

However, the chip of the cutting-edge manufacturing process needs to consume a lot of cost, and the industry has produced a different voice. In recent decades, the decline of the EU consumer electronics industry has made the region lose the ability to digest the production capacity of high-performance chips. Most automotive chips do not require very advanced manufacturing processes.

Infineon is currently one of the world’s largest automotive chip suppliers. Gassel said that only fully autonomous vehicles require higher levels of chip computing power: “In the next five years, most components in cars will not need 20nm or less. Process chips provide computing power support."

A spokesperson for the European Commission did not immediately respond to a request for comment. STMicroelectronics CEO Jean-Marc Chery also made similar comments before. In an interview with French news channel BFM TV this month, he said that he would not participate in the European Union’s chip manufacturing revitalization plan.
